Well hello all,
Welcome to my random update 1! Trying a different format this trip, let me know what you think and any questions for future updates.
Where in the world am I? Ubud, Bali, Indonesia also known as the yoga capital.
What am I doing? Yoga, relaxing & exploring parts of Indo until the 5th October then I fly to KL > Singapore > Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand > Sydney > Melbourne (end of October 2018)
Most exciting thing to date? Seeing and hearing the sound of the powerlines when the arm of an excavator catches them. Just a sizzle along the line toward me, a pop of blue smoke and the excavator keeps driving… I thought I’d glimpse a fried human but no.
Most Ironic part: arriving having my Balinese Airbnb host saying ‘I have an Australian husband’ followed by him popping into view and saying ‘Would you like a cuppa?’
1. Yoga dramatic improvement in flexibility noticeable immediately after my second class and finding an instructor I really like by the 2nd class.
2. Rice paddies- escaping the craziness of the town by walking down a little path and finding yourself amongst the rice paddies and coconut trees. One path is good 4km and leaves from the Main Street.
What made me question being in a developing nation: walking back to the hostel without maps.me and I heading up the steps into the ‘temple/hostel’ and finding a pig in the middle of the path on its side (in a cage), alive. I stepped around it and was glancing around… yep I was 1 place too early.
Eye-rolling moments: I definitely felt like I was back in Asia once I got to Ubud after Seminyak. It was the constant looking at the ground as I walked along to ensure that I didn’t fall into a drain hole in the middle of the footpath that brought this feeling back. And once it rained it only intensified this feeling as I found the drains deeper on the other side of town.
Current travel philosophy: book somewhere for a few nights, extend if excellent + available or then head to the next place. Tomorrow will be my 3rd hostel in Ubud.
Wider trip plans: I literally just added the Singapore/Chiang Mai leg in today. I’ll get to see a family member who there for work and snuck in a side trip to Chiang Mai for 10 nights as I’ve wanted to visit there for years. I’ll also catch a fellow Grad I started with at work between KL and/or Singapore.
Big travel plans: South America was going to be my next destination however this may change as I might bring the Europe part forward and the Middle East (?).
Oh yes for those who don’t know I’m on a 12 month career break which includes my long service leave. And I’m just so glad that I’ve finally had the guts to step away into the unknown without job security and travel for longer than my short trips. I’ve never not worked or taken a gap year so it’s an interesting adjustment to just be able to unwind, get my fitness back and enjoy shaping a new lifestyle. Although scary as hell until I left Australia! I could question the decision to leave my segment and try something new agri and but hey I wouldn’t be here now and I’ve gained a hell of a lot of experience in different areas and loved my time living in Sydney.
